Why Choose Light: John Shares How the Dark Gets Exposed

Choose light. Every day we are given the choice between light and dark. Choose light. Even a spark of light dispels the darkness.

Scripture Focus:

“The light shines in the darkness and the darkness will not overcome the light.” – from John 1:5

Application of Scripture:

We lived in the woods. When it got dark outside, it got dark inside – unless we turned on a light. Even the light from the clock on the microwave would penetrate the darkness the woods brought on.

And when we walked outside and looked up at the sky, the darkness faded in the light of the stars and the moon.

Darkness holds no candle to the Light.

We would take our boys on tours of the many caves in our region. Without fail, the guide would get to the end of the trail and tell everyone to turn off their phones and cover their watches. Then the guide would turn off the trail lights.

You would be able to feel the darkness.

But if even one watch had remained uncovered, that would have been enough light to break the experience.

My friend, Natalie, was telling me about how she had been struggling. “It felt so dark around me. But then a small spark of hope showed up. It was like a speck in my hand – nothing really – but that little spark of hope was enough to light that darkness.”

Always choose light. Light always breaks the darkness. The darkness does not win. Oh, it boasts and it brags and it shouts to try and make us afraid of its false claims. But as soon as the spark of light happens, that light chases away the darkest dark.

John reminds us that even when things seem bad, light breaks through. God sent the rainbow to show that even through the toughest storm, the light follows. This season is the perfect reminder that darkness declares its win, but it’s wrong.

The tomb is empty.

The Light has come.

Darkness fades to the Light.
